A selection of 19th century ukiyo-e prints from the designer Kunisada started me thinking of pattern and colour that is both matched and mismatched. This created a backdrop. The portraiture of Augustus John formed my approach to colour with pigment rich tones from dark navy, green and brown to olive, indigo, plum and ginger with viridian green and cadmium yellow shots. Alongside this an image of Bunny Mellon, secateurs in hand, picking blossom in her garden.
