Concert promoter Another Planet Entertainment, who also organizes Outside Lands, announced the 1st of several concerts they plan to promote over the summer each year. The concert will kick off at 3 PM on Saturday, August 17th, and will go until 10 PM, featuring headlining sets by the superstar Rockers System of a Down and Sacramento’s The Deftones. Additional acts performing on the bill include The Mars Volta, Viagra Boys, and VOWWS. Organizers were given the green light by San Francisco supervisors last year to be able to re-use the existing production from Outside Lands for several additional concerts in the Polo Fields, where the concert will be held the week following Outside Lands. This will hopefully be the 1st of several to come.
APE notes that this August concert date will be System of a Down’s only performance this year outside of the Sick New World Festival later this month in Las Vegas, which is sold out.
Organizers also say that, outside of night shows at the Outside Lands festival, this will be the first standalone, night-time concert ever in the history of Golden Gate Park. Dating back to the 1960s, legends like Jefferson Airplane, Janis Joplin, The Grateful Dead, and Jimi Hendrix all performed there, but these were all daytime shows.
“We are excited to be bringing such an iconic lineup to the city and what better venue than Golden Gate Park,” said Another Planet Entertainment president of concerts and festivals Allen Scott in a release. “We are expecting fans from not just the Bay Area but from across the U.S. and internationally to travel to the city, injecting money into the local economy. From hotels to local restaurants and everything in between, this will be a great night of music and a great economic boost for the city.”
System of a Down, which was formed by four Armenian–American musicians in Glendale, California, in 1994, has become one of the most popular rock and metal bands on the planet. Their last musical release was 20 years ago, and this will be their 30th year celebration as a band. Co-headliners Deftones are also a massive Bay Area favourite and one of the biggest bands to come out of the States Capitol (Sacramento) also, celebrating three decades together.
The presale for the concert begins on Thursday, April 11, at 10 a.m., and general ticket sales start the following day. Tickets for the concert will begin at $169 plus fees for general admission and $399 plus fees for VIP tickets.
