The LIE SANGBONG Fall/Winter 2015 collection, entitled “Oriental Ink,” is a study in modern elegance. Beginning with an examination of linear oriental ink paintings of peonies, Mr. Lie found inspiration in the juxtaposition of the clean lines of the drawings and the shape and vibrancy of the flower’s petals. A focus on suiting and outwear showcases the brand’s signature sophisticated constructions and multi-dimensional fabrications. “I wanted to focus on subtlety and to explore the mixing and matching of classic autumnal fabrics in new and fresh ways,” said Mr. Lie.
The Fall/Winter collection features deceptively minimal, linear silhouettes that emphasize the waist. A color palate of camel, navy, burgundy and grey is punctuated with graphic red, black and white. Precisely tailored coats, jackets and skirts were created by combining curvilinear pleated seams, layered petal-shaped fabric panels and slits, complimenting the movement of the wearer. Offering utility, the majority of outerwear pieces include detachable knit or fur collars and are fully reversible. Texture, too, adds interest, demonstrated best in exceptional cropped jackets and sleeveless vests in dyed Kalgan fur and curly Mongolian lamb. Stand-out evening coats are offered in specialty fabrics: a black and white jacquard with leather sleeves, a black lacquered basket weave wool with pony hair accents and a black and white gingham print shearling with an embroidered cherry blossom motif and sequin accents. “I think women are looking toward minimalism and simplicity, but with playful, veiled contrasts to add uniqueness and individuality,” said Lie.
Graphic peony-inspired black and white prints are utilized in oversized and reduced formats, on a dress and coat. To complement the collection, LIE SANGBONG has collaborated with Sun K. Kwak, a Korean-born, New York City- based artist. Kwak is well known for her signature three-dimensional “space drawings” constructed entirely of making tape. For the Fall/Winter 2015 runway show, Kwak is creating a site-specific drawing installation which will run across the venue walls and down the entire 86 ft. long runway. The work aims to rhythmically transform the space and challenge the viewers’’ sense of perception.
The LIE SANGBONG Fall-Winter 2015 collection will be available in August 2015 at retailers across the globe, including the brand’s recently opened US boutique located at 30 Gansevoort St in New York City.
