Coach, Inc., a leading New York design house of modern luxury accessories and lifestyle brands, today celebrates the debut of its Coach 1941 Men’s Collection at Bloomingdale’s with Baseman x Coach pop-up shops and custom windows at their 59th Street flagship and select stores nationwide. The 45-piece collection features artwork by renowned Los Angeles artist Gary Baseman.
For this collection, American influences remain key: cinematic references, the great American landscape, and the character and individuality of New York City. There is a tougher take on masculinity and a celebration of rebellion in American counterculture subverted with Baseman’s signature iconic prints, characters, and motifs.
“We’ve worked with Gary Baseman previously, but this time we’ve taken American iconography—Surfer, Hawaii and Western—to create imagery that disrupts those ideas, weaving a mischievous, unexpected thread through familiar, nostalgic references,” said Coach Executive Creative Director Stuart Vevers. “The collection overall is less wholesome but still remains true to all of Coach’s values with a more extreme take.”
Set against a poetic backdrop inspired by the Spring 2017 show, the windows and pop-ups juxtapose Coach’s craftsmanship with the mood of tough romance seen in the collection. Artisan elements combined with authentic and modern materials such as warm chrome, wood and neon street signs creates the perfect backdrop to the irreverent, bold collaboration between Baseman and Coach.
“We are excited to bring this unique collaboration to the Bloomingdale’s men’s floor,” says Kevin Harter, Bloomingdale’s VP Fashion Director, Men’s & Home. “Gary Baseman’s dynamic artwork puts a fresh spin on this season’s Coach 1941 collection and we think this will resonate with the Bloomingdale’s guy.”
Key Baseman x Coach pieces include the Gnarly Face T-Shirt, created using his signature graphic vintage-inspired prints, the tailored Wild Lily jacket with his take on a classic Hawaiian floral print, and the Printed Officer’s Jacket, featuring Baseman’s illustrations on white lambskin, exclusively pre-launching at select Bloomingdale’s stores. The range also features Baseman’s spin on the classic penny loafer subverted with punk studs and the artist’s designs.
Following the New York unveiling, Baseman x Coach pop-up shops will roll out February 7th to select Bloomingdale’s in Beverly Hills, San Francisco, and the North Michigan store in Chicago.
