Marimekko to donate a portion of proceeds from the sale of every Tasaraita garment from January 18 – February 28, 2017 to the women’s rights organization.
Marimekko, the Finnish design house renowned for its distinctive prints and colors, positive lifestyle philosophy and history of strong female leaders, is excited to partner with Equality Now – a global organization dedicated to protecting and promoting the human rights of women and girls around the world – by offering a donation of $10 per Tasaraita-print garment sold.
The unisex Tasaraita print’s woven, equal-spaced horizontal stripes have served as a symbol of parity and equality among men, women, and children since it was first introduced by Marimekko in 1968. Marimekko designer Annika Rimala wanted to create timeless, anonymous everyday clothes that suited everyone, regardless of age or gender. The result was Tasaraita, Marimekko’s first jersey series. Of all Marimekko designs, Annika’s simple even-striped T-shirt has become the most enduring symbol of equality – and it has been featured in Marimekko collections continuously since its launch.
In spring 2017, Marimekko introduces revamped silhouettes and a new, lighter material to the Tasaraita collection.
Inspired by the company’s founding ideals and the beloved Tasaraita’s history, the partnership serves to promote Equality Now’s mission of creating a just world for women and girls. Championing equality and female empowerment has remained a strong part of Marimekko’s DNA since the company’s founding in 1951. As of December 2015, 94% of Marimekko’s staff was female, and its management board, including President and CEO, Tiina Alahuhta-Kasko, and Creative Director, Anna Teurnell, currently consists of women only.
